Fire Weather Watch

By Carlos Padilla

The National Weather Service in El Paso Texas/Santa Teresa NM has issued an urgent Fire Weather Message, warning that critical fire conditions are expected to return to the region on Sunday.

An upper level storm system will be digging into Arizona on Saturday. As it does, west to southwest winds will be on the increase ahead of it Saturday. Winds of 20-35 MPH are possible Sunday afternoon and evening.

These winds will combine with minimum relative humidities under 15 percent to create extremely critical fire weather conditions throughout southern New Mexico. Wind gusts up to 50 MPH are likely. Minimum relative humidities will fall to around five percent in eastern zones to around 15 percent in the Gila National Forest.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

A fire weather watch means that critical fire conditions are forecast to occur.

Updates from the National Weather Service will be reported here.
