If the vacant Hot Springs varsity football head coaching position were to be filled by popular Facebook acclamation, longtime defensive coordinator Daniel Terrazas would be a shoo-in for the post.

A Facebook page started by Arrey businessman and assistant HSHS baseball coach Edward Bamonte titled, “Coach T for HSHS Head Football Coach,” had attracted 361 members as of Monday morning, April 2.

Terrazas, an English teacher at Hot Springs and former Tiger Baseball head coach, is vying to succeed longtime head coach Travis Lee, who announced his resignation on March 12. Lee is joining his son, Kelley, as an assistant coach at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

“It is great to see the interest in the head football coaching vacancy,” Truth or Consequences Schools Athletic Director Craig Cummins told The Herald Friday in an e-mail.

Cummins said the Tiger football head coaching position will be posted this week on the New Mexico REAP website.

“Positions generally remain posted a minimum of two weeks, but sometimes longer if necessary,” the AD said. “As of today, no completed applications have been received.”

Cummins also said that once the coaching position is officially posted, an interview committee will be organized.

“The intent is to include parents, school staff, and other boosters on the committee,” he said.

Cummins said he was not aware of the Facebook page in support of Terrazas until a Herald reporter brought it to his attention.

Cummins, however, said a handful of parents have personally approached him to express support for Terrazas, as well as to volunteer to serve on the selection committee.

Cummins also noted that the vacant varsity volleyball head coaching position will be posted on the NM REAP site this week.

Cummins did not renew the contact of two-year volleyball coach Brandi Cox, although she was invited to reapply for the post.

Meantime, the Facebook accolades continue to roll in for Terrazas.

A sampling of Facebook posts:

“I too support Coach T as head coach for the Tigers!” writes Twila Henderson Welch. “I’ve known Daniel since high school and nobody could be a better choice for coach than him. He’s a wonderful teacher, totally committed to these kids, the school and his community. He is an asset to our schools and would make an excellent head football coach.”

Writes Bamonte, who created the page: “This page is dedicated to the people that believe Coach Terrazas should be the next Head Coach of the HSHS football team. There should be no debate. We understand there is a process. But in this case, there is no other better choice!”

Joseph Jaramillo writes, “I played for coach Terrazas and that man will teach his players not only the game of football but life and how to be a man and take our goals and dreams head on and to make them reality…”

“There is nothing better than a hometown hero who had dedicated his life to give back to his community,” writes Laura-Lee Booth. “I’m 100000% in favor of raising up our own! Hopefully, the (selection committee) will give the job to someone who has definitely earned their ‘Tiger’ stripes on the home turf!”
