An early morning fire near Interstate 25’s Exit 59 destroyed two structures as well as a couple of vehicles, including a motorboat and trailer Wednesday, April 4.

A motorist on I-25 reported the blaze at 3:03 a.m., according to Arrey and Caballo fire personnel. Firefighters from both of these departments and the Las Palomas Fire Department battled the blaze for the next few hours.

When the homeowner, who resides in Oklahoma, was notified of the blaze later that morning, he immediately requested an arson investigation.

Arson investigators from the New Mexico Fire Marshal’s Office were summoned to the scene. Arson Investigator Michael Ward is heading up the investigation, however, could not be reached prior to The Herald’s press deadline.

Firefighters were on scene until sometime around 8 a.m.

The owner reportedly visited the property 30 days prior to the fire and stayed for a couple of days, according to a neighbor.
