Popular mariachi performer, Antonio Reyna, taking a cue from one of the beautiful songs he sings, “Volver,” will return to Truth or Consequences again this year to perform during the Ralph Edwards/Truth or Consequences Fiesta. Antonio’s first Fiesta appearance three years ago was so well received that he was asked to return this year, and will appear on stage Sunday, May 6, 1-3 p.m., at Ralph Edwards Park. Antonio is no stranger to audiences in Truth or Consequences, having first performed here several times during the late 1990s at Geronimo Days alongside his musical godfather, Nelson Martinez.
As a very young child, Antonio was introduced to Lola Beltran by way of her television show. It was this exposure to Lola’s music that nourished his love and passion for mariachi music, and initiated a lifelong admiration for the “Queen of the Ranchera song.”
Prior to 1996, KOAT TV News anchor Nelson Martinez decided to sponsor Antonio’s first public performance, and invited him to perform with him, thus establishing himself as Antonio’s musical godfather. This performance received a thrilling response by the audience and was the first of many more. Thanks to this exposure, Antonio’s career took off.
The year 2003 was a pivotal year for Antonio, following many successful performances throughout the Southwest, and his recording and release of his first CD, “Con Mis Propias Manos.” He gained international recognition when he met legendary motion picture and recording artist Chelo. Upon listening to Antonio’s voice, Chelo heard and loved the special quality of his voice. She realized the potential of his musical career and was moved to invite Antonio to perform with her at the internationally prestigious concert she headlined, the 13th Annual Mariachi Spectacular Concert in Albuquerque, thus becoming Antonio’s official musical godmother, or madrina.
Chelo’s support and encouragement are testaments to the unique and wonderful qualities of Antonio’s voice and talent. Combine this special talent, and add a genuine love and passion for the most beautiful music in the world, and you have an exciting, thrilling and emotionally-packed show. Antonio’s performances never fail to thrill his audiences and result in return engagements every time.
Antonio has been regularly invited to perform at one of New Mexico’s hottest casinos, Sandia Casino. His lounge show has become very popular and the seats fill up fast on Fiesta Sundays.
Some of his many awards include NMHEA/Upcoming Artist of the Year, NMHMA/Tradition Ranchera Song of the Year, and NMHMA/Male Vocalist of the Year.
Antonio will perform with a full mariachi band on May 6, in Ralph Edwards Park during the 63rd Annual Truth or Consequences Fiesta, 1-3 p.m. Antonio will have several of his CDs for sale after his performance, and will be happy to autography them. He hopes to see all his old fans and make some new ones at the mariachi on Sunday, May 6.
