Hard-Charging Dalrymple Still on State Tourney Chase

Justin Dalrymple, the lone senior on the Hot Springs boys golf team, has earned one state qualifying leg, and is chasing his second and third.

HSHS head coach Derek Bean said Dalrymple continues to demonstrate the “eye of the tiger as he battles to reach his goal of competing in the state tournament.”

In Roswell on April 16, Dalrymple fired a two-round score of 79-84, missing the cut by a single stroke the first day and by five strokes the second day.

“I am very proud of Justin, as he kept grinding it out to try and get qualified,” said Bean. “He is there, we just have to eliminate those little shots that bite us. If you know him like I have come to know him, he simply will not give up.”

Dalrymple came to Roswell fresh off a state qualifying score of 79 during his home tournament at Sierra del Rio on April 5.

Bean said Dalrymple came into the tournament brimming with confidence.

The first day he picked up right where he left off with a train of pars. A few bogeys, however, left him with a 79 – respectable, but a shot off the qualifying mark.

After the first day, Dalrymple was tied for 10th out of 90 players. Not to be discouraged, he was focused for the second day and came out guns-a-blazing, playing the five hardest holes even par.

“A couple of silly shots got him on a few bogeys and he ended up with an 84 missing the qualifying mark (79) by five,” said Bean.

Dalrymple finished fifth out of 20 players represented in the district and fell to 28th in the 90-player field.

As a team, the Tigers shot a score of 402 and 409 over the two-day tournament.

“Obviously the scores are higher than we want, but improvement is starting to show,” said Bean. “With the team qualifying score at 335, we have a long ways to go.”

Bean said the underclassmen are showing great improvement.

Justin Armijo, a freshman, shot 106 the first day and roared back the next day with a 94.

“I’m very pleased to see he stuck with his game plan,” Bean said of Armijo.

The other two freshmen representing HSHS had a rough go with Jody Dalrymple shooting 113-112 and Jared Bean firing a 104 -119.

The Tigers traveled to Deming on Wednesday, April 19. Results were not immediately available.

The Tigers were at Santa Teresa on Monday and travel to Silver City on Thursday, May 26.
