Five Seeking Top Job for Girls Basketball, Four for Volleyball

Nine individuals have applied for the open varsity football head coaching position at Hot Springs High, according to Truth or Consequences Schools Athletic Director Craig Cummins.
“I was hoping for more, so I was somewhat surprised (by the number of applicants),” Cummins said Monday, May 7. “But it’s a good field. We’ve got some good prospects, and I’m really impressed with the applicants.”
Cummins said he could not identify the applicants by name due to privacy issues, although he did say that two of the hopefuls are “in-house,” meaning they’re currently employed by the school district.
The position became open following the resignation last March of longtime Tiger football head coach Travis Lee, who is now an assistant coach at Eastern New Mexico University.
Cummins said one applicant hails from Texas and the other six reside in New Mexico.
Cummins said an eight-member selection committee consisting of parents, patrons and administrators will begin interviewing football coaching applicants on Thursday, May 10.
Interviews for basketball and volleyball will begin next week.
Cummins, who joined the school district in January, said he will ultimately make the hiring recommendations to Superintendent Tom Burris.
The new coaches will be announced before the start of the summer break later this month, he said.
Cummins also said five individuals have applied for the HSHS varsity girls basketball head coaching position, while the district received four applications for the volleyball head coaching position.
Third-year basketball head coach Walt Sanchez was released mid-season last January due to credentialing issues with the state Public Education Department.
In volleyball, Cummins did not renew the contract of second-year head coach Brandi Cox.
