Memorial Day weekend typically marks the beginning of the summer vacation season throughout the United States, and Sierra County – with its plethora of water, beaches and forests – beckons to people throughout New Mexico and the region to come enjoy our natural resources.
But Memorial Day is about much more than fishing, boating, hiking, four-wheeling, camping and racing over the water in personal watercraft – it’s a time to reflect, individually and as a nation, and to honor the men and women who died while serving the United States Armed Forces.
The Fly Freedom’s Flag Boat Parade will be held Saturday, May 26, beginning at 10 a.m., at Elephant Butte Lake.
Events will take place at Dam Site Marina and Marina del Sur within Elephant Butte Lake State Park, with a floating parade of boats. The event begins at 10 a.m., with a POW/MIA service at Dam Site Restaurant’s patio.
Decorated boats will meet at Dam Site to start the boat parade at 12 p.m. At 12:30 p.m., the boats pass by the main boat ramp at Marina del Sur, for a wreath toss and the playing of “Taps.”
