If there’s a stairway to the state volleyball tournament, perhaps Hot Springs took its first small step at Tularosa on Thursday, Aug. 30, when it won its first game of the season.
The Tigers lost the match 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-7, 25-15), but that second-game win on the road represents a major steppingstone for the young Tigers.
“Baby steps, we just got to take one stride at a time,” Tigers head coach Robert Haro said. “I think near the end (of the season) we’ll be okay.”
Hot Springs opened the season at home against Hope Christian on Aug. 28. The visiting Huskies looked quite comfortable within the confines of Tiger Gym, winning the match 3-0 (25-16, 25-4, 25-14).
“You could tell they were the better team than we were, they were more experienced,” said Haro.
Despite being down 2-0 against Hope, Hot Springs showed some fight, tying the third game at 13-all before the Huskies closed it out with a 12-1 run.
