H.E.R.O.S. Inc. Launches All New Race Courses Through Spaceport America

HEROS Inc is proud to announce new race courses for 2013.  Due to extremely low water levels early in the season race organizers were forced to consider changes from the previous routes that were favorites with triathletes around the region. After much planning and deliberation the Dam Site Recreation Area was chosen and all 2013 events have been moved to one weekend- 6 multi-sport races will be held in this triathlon festival format over the Sept 28-29 weekend.

On Saturday morning, Sept 28, 2013, the Xterra Dread Mon will once again host 3 time World Champion and 10 time National Champion ShonnyVanlandingham on a challenging course full of history and natural beauty. The race will include an 800 m swim, 11 mi mountain bike and 3 mile trail run.  Later  Saturday a volunteer duathlon will be held to give the energetic  volunteers a chance to try their hand (and feet) at racing in Sierra County  – this will be a light hearted 1 mile bike and ½ mi run manned by the athletes who will get a chance to support the volunteers who have helped them over the years. Saturday’s events will culminate with the Damsite Triathlon youth race that is graded in distance for age groups from 6-16 years old.

Sunday morning activities will kick off with the TrinadadelMuerto ½ iron distance triathlon-that will take athletes on a 1.2 mile swim around the Elephant Butte, a 56 mile bike ride into Spaceport America and back and a 13.1 mile run around the roads of Elephant Butte Lake State Park. Organizers are extremely excited to announce the turn around point for the bike portion will be within Spaceport America – this took many parties within the County, Spaceport America and HEROS Inc coming together for the benefit of the community and all parties are excited that this will start a long and prosperous relationship where Spaceport America and Sierra Co work together. Sunday’s activities will also include an Olympic distance triathlon- the Holy Moly Oly – which includes a 1 mile swim, 26 mile bike and 6 mile run; and the Chupacabra Challenge – a sprint distance tri- 800 meter swim, 12mile bike and 3 mile run. All Sunday races will travel through Champagne Hills subdivision  thanks to the cooperation of the home and land owners in this area.

Organizers would like to thank all of the amazing individuals who continue to put personal gain aside to make these events successful. 5 time Elephant Man Champion, Clay Moseley sums up the excitementof racing in Sierra Co. nicely “It’s all about the fun and massive inspiration from all the Sierra Co folks who come out to make this happen every year as well as the amazing competitors who make this one of the premier events in the entire Southwest.”

Get ready Sierra County – with all the collaboration already happening this is slated to be the best year yet! To volunteer or sponsor please call 575-744-0055.

Please remember to use caution on the roads in the coming weeks as athletes come to train and again on race weekend- share the roads and take a moment to cheer on these amazing athletes who love to race in our backyard.  Please  see the schedule of events listed below for more specific time frames for all of the weekend’s events.
