Griego Captures 64th Annual TorC Golf Open Championship

Richard Griego of Socorro won the 64th Annual Truth or Consequences Amateur Open last weekend at the Municipal Golf Course.

Griego fired a net score of 132 (65-67) to win the Open Division first flight (blue and white tees) to succeed 2013 Open champ Nick Silva, also of Socorro. Silva was not on hand to defend his title, reportedly playing at a tourney in Belen during the same time.

Truth or Consequences Muni PGA Pro Howie Tucker said 25 golfers competed in the two-day tourney (Aug. 16-17), with players hailing from Sierra County, Socorro, Alamogordo and Albuquerque.

The nine-hole Muni has been sporting very green, very lush fairways nearly all summer thanks to an active rainy season, but Tucker said a deluge Thursday night had the grounds crews scrambling to repair a trio of culverts overrun by mud and debris and reconfigure the par- 4 No. 3/12 hole where even the best tee shot was susceptible to a hazardous landing.

What makes the Muni one of the most enjoyable golf course around are the dramatic elevation shifts and the west-to-east arroyo hazard that cuts across several fairways running north and south, but it’s also a perennial headache for Tucker and company.

In the second flight, Richie Gutierrez of Socorro prevailed with a net 129 (63-66).

A pair of senior flights completed the field with a pair of local residents prevailing: Bob Lemmer won the first one with a 141 (69-72) and Eddie LeBlanc took honors in the second one with a 143 (68-75).
