Vehicle Burglaries on the Rise

By Carlos Padilla

Unsecured vehicles are being targeted by an unspecified number of roaming thieves, who are taking whatever they can get their hands on.

Truth or Consequences Police Department (TCPD) Captain James Morgan on Monday, Aug. 18, told The Herald that the burglaries taking place in Truth or Consequences and Williamsburg appear to be crimes of opportunity for the most part. Capt. Morgan further added that the vehicles targeted recently include those that are left unlocked or with their windows down, and that a number of random items have been reported stolen, including wallets, purses, electronic devices and vehicle documents.

In addition, vehicle thefts have been reported in nearby Elephant Butte, according to Herald sources.

Capt. Morgan characterized the recent onslaught of burglaries as being scattered throughout the local area, adding that a half-dozen have been reported in the past several weeks.
