Labor Day weekend may mark the unofficial end of summer, but at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, the weather and water is warm, fishing is great, and fun events are coming up!
CAST for Kids on Sept. 13, will be held 8 a.m.-12 p.m., at Marina del Sur. This is a wonderful community event that teaches children how to fish. Co-sponsored by the Bureau of Reclamation, every young participant will get a tackle box, a fishing pole, and memories lasting a lifetime as park rangers and community volunteers teach fishing techniques. Participants are eligible for great awards and prizes. Enjoy a cookout for participants afterward. Volunteers are welcome! Call the park at (575) 744-5525 to volunteer your services.
The Elephant Butte Balloon Regatta is also on Saturday, Sept. 13-14, beginning at 6 a.m., each day. Bring your family and experience a serene morning at the park. Enjoy a beautiful sunrise as balloons lift off. Hot air balloons will ascend from the beach and float above the lake, making your morning beautiful as you camp, boat or hike at the park. Regular entrance fees apply.
State Park officials remind boaters to always wear a lifejacket when out on the water and to be aware of weather conditions – they can change quickly. State law requires that you wear a lifejacket when on a canoe, kayak or raft, and that all children 12 years old and younger wear a lifejacket while on the deck of a moving vessel.
The State Parks Division offers free boating safety classes around the state and online throughout the year. For more information on free boating classes or events, please call 888-NMPARKS or visit www.nmparks.com.
