Meet the Candidates Downtown Saturday Night

Candidate Forum Set for Next Thursday

By Carlos Padilla

The upcoming weekend offers several opportunities for local residents by way of entertainment.

The much-anticipated Elephant Days will be held Friday-Sunday, Sept. 12-14, in Elephant Butte and Elephant Butte Lake State Park (see related article elsewhere in this edition), and the Second Saturday Art Hop will be taking place in downtown Truth or Consequences 6-9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13.

During this same time – Saturday, Sept. 13, 6-9 p.m. – many candidates are making themselves available for a “Meet the Candidates” event to be held at the westernmost parking lot of Bank of the Southwest’s Truth or Consequences branch.

The local electorate is encouraged to take a break from the festivities and to take the opportunity to learn about the candidates attending the “Meet the Candidates” event, and seeking public elected office.

Each attending candidate will have information on site available to the public in the form of brochures and cards, and may have posters and banners at the tables. Candidates will primarily be available to speak to the attending public one-on-one.

A table will be on site for those wishing to submit questions for candidates to answer at the upcoming Candidates Forum being sponsored by The Herald, the Sierra County Republican Party and the Democratic Party of Sierra County.

The Candidates Forum is right around the corner, scheduled to be held at the Albert Lyon Events Center on the Sierra County Fair Grounds located on South Broadway. The forum will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18, and opens to the public at 5:30 p.m.

Candidates seeking the office of Public Regulation Commission for the State of New Mexico, two Sierra County Commission positions, Sierra County Sheriff, Sierra County Magistrate Court Judge, and Probate Judge have reserved the evening to answer questions provided by the community.

Questions from the public are being accepted until 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 3, and may be submitted at The Herald, located at 1204 N. Date St., at herald@torcherald.com and carlos@torcherald.com, and at the Meet the Candidates event taking place on Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Bank of the Southwest-Truth or Consequences branch.
