Public Hearings on Downtown Designation, Affordable Solar Requests Highlight Meeting

The Truth or Consequences City Commission Tuesday night was scheduled to hold a public hearing and take action on a proposed resolution designating a 30-block sector downtown as a Metropolitan Redevelopment Area.

During the last 10 months, the city, in concert with MainStreet Truth or Consequences, has been working on the Downtown Master Plan and Metropolitan Redevelopment Area plan.

“The MRA Plan process provides a tremendous benefit to the community as it provides a means by which the city can proactively address blighted conditions and engage in public/private partnerships that might not be otherwise feasible,” Assistant City Manager Bill Slettom wrote in a staff recommendation letter to the commission.

The proposed area runs along and above Main Street and Diaz Street, and its southern stretch runs between Austin and Marr streets. The area’s eastern border runs north along Austin/Cedar streets and the western stretch ends at McElroy Avenue. The major streets included in the area are Main, Broadway, McAdoo, Simms and Austin running east and west. The north-south streets include Post, Clancy, Daniels, Foch, Jones and Pershing.
