The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Bomb Team responded to the Elephant Butte Dam area, where employees of the Sierra Electric Co-op (SEC) reportedly located a suspicious package, according to a NMSP press release.
The discovery of a suspicious package located inside a fenced-in power transformer area approximately 1,000 meters from Elephant Butte Dam couldn’t have come on a more unfortunate day – Thursday, Sept. 11, the 13th anniversary of terrorist attacks.
The Herald received phone calls just before 2:45 p.m., Thursday, with callers reporting that law enforcement had shut down State Highway 51 to all traffic between Truth or Consequences and Spaceport America, near Milepost 5.
Eastbound traffic was held at the Rio Grande Bridge on State Highway 51, and law enforcement officials prevented westbound traffic from entering the area southeast of the dam.
Sierra County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Glenn Hamilton told The Herald Thursday afternoon that old dynamite and blasting caps were located in a structure.
