With the onset of winter right around the corner, the City of Truth or Consequences swimming pool is busy getting into the swing of the upcoming seasons.
The temporary inflatable cover is set to be put up Oct. 21-23. This project is a huge undertaking, and will require many volunteers from the public in addition to the majority of city employees. The exact time and date for volunteers will be released within the next few weeks.
A new winter pool schedule is in effect beginning Sept. 15, and will run until May 2015. This schedule has the pool open seven days a week, with both early morning and evening swims, as well as weekends. However, since the pool is still not at full staff, they are temporarily closed on Sundays and Mondays until staff can be hired and trained. This process should take place before the end of October.
There will be a final lifeguard certification course offered at the swimming pool beginning Friday, Oct. 17. The course will run through the weekend, ending on Monday, Oct. 20. This is the last chance for lifeguard certification until April 2015. The City of Truth or Consequences, as well as the Sierra County Swim Team, utilize volunteer lifeguards for various programs, with many programs paying wages of $12.50 per hour per guard. For more information, please call the pool at (575) 894-6151.
The Bountiful Babies free swim lesson program has been extended through the first two weeks of October, thanks to a generous donation from one of the community members. On Saturday, Oct. 11, 12-1 p.m., will be the final lesson for this month, as other programs will be taking place. Do not miss out on this free swim lesson opportunity. Babies ages six and under are welcome, limit 12 per class.
The Friends of the Pool is still meeting monthly. The group’s next project will consist of canvas/panel painting to be placed along the outside of the swimming pools enclosure fence. The FOP will seek preliminary artwork designs from interested community members. All supplies and work will be on a volunteer basis. The FOP will attempt to give a stipend for the artists for supplies, however, everyone is encouraged to find a sponsor/donor to help defray the costs of this project.
The Friends of the Pool hope to beautify the swimming pool one project at a time, as well as create fundraising opportunities to help keep the swimming pool afloat in the future. If you are interested in donating, sponsoring, or becoming a member, please contact Chairman Millie McLeod (575) 894-2363. Future meetings, updates, and other useful information can also be found on the bulletin boards at the pool, located at 775 Daniels St.
The swimming pool will also be hosting additional programs throughout the winter, including the swim team sponsored year around swim club, adult and senior stroke mechanic and swim instruction classes, and even water therapy classes. These programs will be announced in The Herald, as well as at the City of Truth or Consequences Swimming Pool. Please do not hesitate to come check them out, and it doesn’t have to cost you a dime! There are free swim days each second and fourth Saturday of the month. The air may be crisp, but the water is usually nice and warm. Give us a try, get back into shape, or just come to relax, soak and float.
