The Hot Springs varsity boys and girls basketball teams kick off the new season this week.
The Tiger boys, under second-year head coach Gus Cardona, travel to Ruidoso on Thursday, Nov. 20, in the season opener (C-team 4 p.m., junior varsity 5:30 p.m., varsity 7 p.m.).
Cardona, who took over the boys program midway through the season last year, said his team recently scrimmaged against Moriarty. Injuries to key players during the recently concluded football season will keep the Tigers at less than full strength to start the season, according to Cardona.
Cardona said the early season focus will be on steadily improving in anticipation of District 3-4A play, which begins in late January at Silver City.
Like their fall sports counterparts in volleyball and basketball, the HSHS boys and girls basketball teams are now competing in the new 3-4A also consisting of Silver, Hatch Valley, Socorro and Cobre.
The Lady Tigers, under second-year head coach Terry Taylor, join the boys on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Tiger Gym in a double home-opener against visiting Cliff.
The Lady Tigers junior varsity team will take the floor at 1 p.m., followed by the boys junior varsity game at 2:30 p.m. The girls varsity game starts at 4 p.m., and tip-off for the boys varsity game is at 5:30 p.m.
The girls are at the Lordsburg Tournament starting Dec. 9.
The boys team travel to East Mountain in Albuquerque on Dec. 16.
